The national seashore part was more primitive. To me, the state park always resembled a commercial campground sites close together with little or no privacy, but more amenities. Please bear in mind that it's been quite awhile since i camped, but we used to camp at assateague at least once, and often twice or 3 times a year.always at the national seashore. We've done well leaving at 4 am and getting across the bridge by 6 or 7.it's the going home that is always a problem for us! Last summer, the horses walked right past us as we sat on the beach in the dark.and then we got to go back to sleep in the air conditioned comfort of our condo beds.Īlas, the traffic seems to be quite a problem. Ask at the Visitors Center and they'll show you where you can have a fire and what the rules are. We've been doing this for the last few years and my sons (5 and 11) agree that it's their favorite part of our vacation. Many people don't realize that you can have a campfire on the beach at Assateague. Even if you don't attend a program, you can wade in the bay at Old Ferry Landing and see lots of neat creatures like grass shrimp and mussels. My kids both loved using the seine nets during the program at Old Ferry Landing. We pick up a schedule on our first day and plan if we want to come for any events. Don't miss the Visitors Center on the mainland before you cross the bridge to the island-it's free, and kids love the "please touch" tank. We stop on our way down (we leave at 4 am from Gettysburg, and usually arrive in the area by 8 or 9) and spend the day there before we check in.
